Ser for permanent characteristics, origin, time. Estar for temporary states, location, ongoing actions.

Examples

Soy profesor (I am a teacher - permanent)

Estoy cansado (I am tired - temporary)

Es de España (He is from Spain)

Está en Madrid (He is in Madrid)
