保护生物多样性

You use it as a complete goal or slogan. You can say we *must* do it. You can say it is *important*. Usually, it follows verbs like 呼吁 (to call for) or 重视 (to value). It is a bit formal but very common now. You will see it on posters and in news reports.

Use it when discussing climate change with friends. It works great in a school presentation. Use it when you see a beautiful nature reserve. It is perfect for professional CSR reports. If you are at a zoo, it fits perfectly. Even texting a friend about a cool nature doc works. It shows you care about the bigger picture.

Do not use it for small, personal things. Do not say it about your messy room. Unless you are making a very nerdy joke. It is too big for a single houseplant. Avoid it in very slang-heavy street talk. It might sound a bit like a textbook there.

China has put a massive focus on this recently. You will hear the term 生态文明 (Ecological Civilization) often. China hosted a huge UN biodiversity conference in Kunming. Because of this, the phrase is everywhere now. It is a point of national pride. People are very aware of protecting local species like the snub-nosed monkey.

You might hear 维护生态平衡 (maintain ecological balance). Or simply 爱护大自然 (love and protect nature). If you want to be specific, use 物种多样性 (species diversity). But 保护生物多样性 remains the gold standard for being clear.
