Using Interactive Subtitles

SubLearn's interactive subtitles transform passive watching into active learning. Click any word for instant translations, save vocabulary, and customize your viewing experience.

Subtitle Modes

Choose the subtitle display that works best for you:

  • Target Language Only - See only the language you're learning (best for advanced learners)
  • Translation Only - Display only your native language (useful for following difficult content)
  • Dual Subtitles - Show both languages simultaneously (recommended for most learners)
  • No Subtitles - Hide all subtitles to test pure comprehension

Interactive Features

Click for Translation

Tap any word in the subtitles to see:

  • Translation in your native language
  • Part of speech (noun, verb, adjective, etc.)
  • Example sentences
  • Audio pronunciation
  • Quick "Add to Vocabulary" button

Keyboard Shortcuts

  • S - Save the currently highlighted word
  • R - Replay the current subtitle segment
  • T - Toggle subtitle visibility
  • D - Toggle dual subtitle mode

💡 Learning Strategy

Use the "Progressive Difficulty" method: Start with dual subtitles, switch to target language only after the first watch, then try no subtitles on the third viewing. This builds comprehension gradually.

Subtitle Customization

Personalize your subtitle experience:

  • Font Size - Adjust from small to large
  • Position - Top or bottom of video
  • Background - Add shadow or background for better readability
  • Delay - Adjust timing if subtitles are out of sync

Building Vocabulary from Subtitles

Make the most of new words you encounter:

  1. Click an unfamiliar word in the subtitles
  2. Review its translation and usage
  3. Click "Add to Vocabulary" or press 'S'
  4. The word is added to your flashcard review queue
  5. Review it later with spaced repetition

Tips for Effective Use

  • Don't click every word - focus on high-frequency words you'll use often
  • Pay attention to phrases and expressions, not just individual words
  • Use dual subtitles when learning new grammar patterns
  • Challenge yourself by hiding subtitles periodically
  • Replay segments with interesting expressions multiple times
