Using 'Mesmo Que

This rule functions by setting up a hypothetical condition. The word mesmo adds emphasis to the condition. It functions very similarly to embora, but with a twist. While embora often deals with facts, mesmo que usually looks at possibilities. Because these obstacles are hypothetical or uncertain, they trigger a special mood. You guessed it: the Subjunctive. This mood is the soul of Portuguese doubt and desire. Using mesmo que without the Subjunctive sounds like a broken radio to a native ear. The grammar creates a "concession." You concede that a problem exists. However, you insist the main action remains unchanged. It is a logic of contrast. It is perfect for debates or expressing strong personal will.
