نحن في نفس الفصل

It’s also useful in professional workshops or language centers. If you’re at a university, it helps you find study partners. Use it whenever you want to confirm you share a teacher. It’s a very safe, neutral phrase for all ages and levels.

Don't use this phrase in a metaphorical sense for "same boat." If you’re both having a bad day, don't say this. Instead, use the idiom إحنا في الهوا سوا. Also, avoid it in very formal academic writing. In a research paper, you would use نحن في نفس الصف الدراسي. Don't use it if you are merely in the same school but different grades. It specifically refers to sharing the same physical or virtual room.

In many Arab countries, the school system is very social. Students often stay in the same room all day. The teachers are the ones who move between classrooms. This means you spend every minute with the same group. This creates a very strong bond called زمالة (comradeship). Being in the same فصل means you share secrets, snacks, and stress. In Lebanon or Syria, you might hear إحنا بنفس الصف. The word صف is very common there for "class." In formal Modern Standard Arabic, you’d say نحن في الفصل ذاته. Some younger people might use the English word: إحنا في نفس الكلاس. If you want to say you are in the same year but different classes, use دُفعة. For example, إحنا في نفس الدفعة means "We are in the same graduating year."
