Ghayr is an "Exception Noun" that usually translates to "other than" or "not". But here is the secret sauce: grammatically, it acts as the first part of a possessive phrase (Idafa). This is crucial. Because Ghayr is the "owner", the word that comes immediately after it is the "possessed". In Arabic grammar logic, the "possessed" word is always in the Genitive case (Majrur). This means the word after Ghayr must take a Kasra ending (the "i" or "in" sound). Ghayr itself can change its ending depending on where it sits in the sentence, but it is a strict boss to the word following it—that word MUST be Genitive. Always. No exceptions.

• Don't use it for simple "Not" with equations. "He is not a doctor" is usually Laysa tabiban. You *could* say Huwa ghayr tabib (He is a non-doctor), but Laysa is more standard for simple identity negation.

• The Case Crash: The most common error is forgetting the Kasra. Beginners say Ghayr jadidun (keeping the Nominative). Wrong! It must be Ghayr jadidin.
